The Colombo Bar Association, during its committee meeting held yesterday, May 30, discussed the prevailing crisis within the Sri Lanka Bar Association. The meeting resulted in a unanimous decision recommending the temporary resignation of the Sri Lanka Bar Association’s President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer. This recommendation will hold until the completion of an investigation by a committee consisting of five President’s Counsel, focusing on financial and procedural misconduct.
Reports indicate that this recommendation was formally submitted to the Sri Lanka Bar Association today.
The Sri Lanka Bar Association is currently facing severe scrutiny over allegations of misappropriating a Japanese financial grant intended for an anti-corruption program. This issue has been heavily debated within both the Bar Council and the Executive Committee of the Sri Lanka Bar Association, leading to the formation of an investigative committee of President’s Counsel.
One of the key officials under investigation is a prominent candidate for the position of President in the upcoming Bar Association elections next year.
The Colombo Bar Association, which made this recommendation, is the largest regional association within the Sri Lanka Bar Association.
