The National Election Commission has announced guidelines regarding leave for public and private sector employees during the upcoming general election.
Accordingly, Employees who submit a written request for leave to vote must be granted time off.
This leave will be classified as a special holiday with pay, applicable to all employees, including casual workers, and will not count against their regular leave entitlements.
Public sector employees are entitled to special leave for a minimum of four hours, without wage deductions, based on the time necessary for them to vote.
Employers are responsible for determining the leave period based on the distance from the employee’s workplace to their polling station.
The Election Commission emphasizes that all employers should display documentation indicating the period of approved leave at the workplace.
This follows complaints from employees regarding difficulties experienced during previous elections.
The Commission urges all employers to ensure that eligible voters receive the leave they are entitled to by law.
