On March 15, 2025, coinciding with World Consumer Rights Day, a new initiative aimed at protecting consumer rights was launched under the “Clean Sri Lanka” Programme. The launch event took place at the Presidential Secretariat, with the participation of Dr. Nandika Sanath Kumanayake, Secretary to the President, and senior officials from various ministries including Health, Agriculture, and Public Administration.
The initiative focuses on promoting awareness about consumer rights and ensuring access to safe, high-quality food for all citizens. Discussions during the meeting emphasized the practical implementation of existing policies and plans from the Ministry of Health to strengthen food safety and quality standards. The programme also integrates the Ministry of Agriculture’s National Policy framework, with a particular focus on the safety and proper storage of agricultural produce.
The dialogue explored measures for involving both the public and private sectors in enhancing consumer confidence and achieving these objectives effectively. Key topics included restaurant certification, street vendor regulations, and the registration of food establishments such as food trucks.
