Sri Lankan tution class

According to a report published by the state-owned Silumina newspaper on April 6, the Sri Lankan government is considering the possibility of imposing taxes on tuition classes. The government, which recently increased salaries for public sector employees, is now focusing heavily on boosting tax revenue.

Prof. Wasantha Athukorala, Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Peradeniya, told Silumina that despite tuition teachers earning around Rs. 210 billion annually, this sector remains untaxed. He emphasized the urgent need for regulation.

He further revealed that teachers conducting classes for Grades 3–5 earn around Rs. 35 billion annually, while O/L and A/L tuition teachers generate Rs. 94 billion and Rs. 80 billion respectively.
