Vehicle imports to Sri Lanka have resumed following the lifting of the import ban on February 1, but high taxes continue to limit sales, market sources say.
New vehicle importers are currently processing orders, and it typically takes about four to six months for a new vehicle to arrive. Importers are required to register imported vehicles within three months or face penalties, contributing to the delay in availability.
Meanwhile, EconomyNext reported that 1,560 used vehicles from Japan recently arrived at the Hambantota Port. The shipment included popular models such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Prado, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Toyota Raize, Honda Vezel, Daihatsu, and Suzuki Wagon R.
The Sri Lankan government expects to generate over Rs. 300 billion in annual revenue from vehicle imports.
