The Sri Lanka Business Council of the Maldives (SLBCM) was officially launched in Malé on November 12, marking a significant milestone in deepening economic ties between Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

The initiative, spearheaded by Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner to the Maldives, Ranga Goonawardena, aims to strengthen trade, investment, and business relations between the two nations. The event was attended by a wide array of dignitaries, including ministers, diplomats, business leaders, and government officials from both countries.

In his address, the Minister of Economic Development and Trade of the Maldives, Mohamed Saeed, praised the Council as a critical step in formalizing the economic partnership between the nations. He highlighted the importance of the Council in boosting bilateral trade, which currently exceeds $160 million annually, while also fostering innovation and employment opportunities.

High Commissioner Ranga Goonawardena expressed pride in realizing the initiative, emphasizing the Council’s role as a bridge to new business opportunities. “This is not just a platform, but a commitment to prosperity for both Sri Lanka and the Maldives,” he said.

The Council, affiliated with the Sri Lankan High Commission, consists of 14 Executive Committee members and has introduced a special membership category for Maldivian business leaders. A total of 25 honorary members were inducted at the launch event.
