Rohingya refugees in Sri Lanka

The newly declared detention center at the Mullaithivu Air Force camp has reportedly been used to detain 103 Rohingya refugees rescued recently. Public Security Minister Ananda Wijeyapala stated that an investigation is underway to verify if these individuals are genuine refugees, as there are allegations of connections with human traffickers.

The Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission (HRCSL) has criticized the denial of access to the detention center for its officials. HRCSL Chairperson Nimal G. Punchihewa noted that under Section 11(a) of the Human Rights Commission Act, the Commission has the authority to monitor the treatment of detainees, including refugees. A detailed report on the issue is expected to be submitted by December 7, 2024.

Meanwhile, opposition MP Mujiber Rahuman urged President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to ensure the refugees are not deported to Myanmar, citing concerns for their safety. He emphasized the humanitarian obligation to protect the detainees, particularly women and children, who are among those held at the camp.

The HRCSL has called for transparency and adherence to international human rights standards, stressing the importance of allowing independent oversight of detention facilities.
