In a letter dated March 24, the Chairman of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Dr. Tilak Siyambalapitiya, informed Deputy Minister of Economic Development Prof. Anil Jayantha Fernando of an urgent electricity tariff hike in accordance with the guidelines issued by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) in 2024, Anidda newspaper reported.
Copies of the letter have also been sent to the Minister of Power and Energy, the Secretary to the Ministry, and PUCSL.
The reason behind the proposed tariff increase is the financial loss incurred by the CEB. According to PUCSL’s 2024 guidelines, the CEB is allowed to implement a 10% tariff revision if the profit or loss exceeds Rs. 15 billion.
The next scheduled tariff adjustment is due in July 2025. However, this emergency hike may be implemented ahead of that revision.
