In commemoration of International Women’s Day, the Right to Life Human Rights Centre expresses solidarity with women globally, emphasizing the urgent need to address the grave issue of torture against women. Particularly highlighting psychological torture, the Centre underscores the lasting impact it leaves on women’s lives.
Despite legislative alignment with the United Nations Convention against Torture, Sri Lankan women continue to face disproportionate levels of torture, including sexual violence, workplace harassment, and cyberbullying. Reports from organizations like the World Organization Against Torture reveal the alarming prevalence of sexual violence against women, necessitating immediate action.
The Centre emphasizes the societal stigma attached to survivors of sexual violence, hindering their access to support and justice. Moreover, entrenched gender imbalances exacerbate women’s vulnerability to torture and coercion.
On this International Women’s Day, the Right to Life Human Rights Centre calls upon the Sri Lankan government and society to prioritize the protection of women’s rights and dignity. Comprehensive measures are urged to address and eradicate all forms of torture against women, ensuring their safety, security, and access to justice.
Together, let us strive for a future where every woman in Sri Lanka can live free from the nightmare of torture and violence.
